Neither the Annual Credit Report Request Service, nor the Federal Trade Commission, nor the Credit Bureaus will :
Call you first to ask for personal information.
Send you an email asking for personal information.
Send you pop-up internet advertisements asking for personal information.
If you get a phone call or an email or a pop-up advertisement claiming it is from one of these above entities, it is probably a scam. Do not talk on the phone, do not reply to Email, do not click on any link in a pop-up internet advertisement.
Instead, use this Federal Trade Commission site http://www.ftc.gov/spam/
to forward emails or to file a complaint about telephone calls or pop-ups.
How should you request your Credit Reports?
The home mortgage lender will ask you to authorize and pay for your credit history from two or three of the credit bureaus. The only way to be sure that your credit history is reported accurately by all three major credit bureaus is to check all three. Then you can correct any errors before the mortgage lender evaluates your credit.
If you are past the process of getting your mortgage, then you may want to start a cycle such as order Equifax free report in Jan 2008, Experian free report in May 2008, & Trans Union free report in Sept 2008, then begin again anew in 2009. And remember the Federal Law also allws you to buy a report anytime for a reasonable price.
